Work permits are formal written documents used to control certain types of high-risk work activities. They ensure all hazards are assessed, safety measures are in place, and approvals are obtained before work begins.



Types of Work Permits and Their Descriptions

  1. Hot Work Permit

    • Use: For tasks that involve open flames or produce heat/sparks (e.g., welding, cutting).

    • Hazards: Fire, explosion.

    • Controls: Fire watch, fire extinguishers, gas testing.

  2. Work at Height Permit (Working Above Permit)

    • Use: For activities performed at elevated positions.

    • Hazards: Falls.

    • Controls: Fall protection, harnesses, guardrails.

  3. Excavation/Dig Permit (Dig Excavation Penetration Permit)

    • Use: For any digging or trenching work.

    • Hazards: Utility strikes (gas, electrical), collapse.

    • Controls: Utility scans, shoring, barricades.

  4. Confined Space Entry Permit

    • Use: For entering spaces not designed for continuous occupancy (e.g., tanks, pits).

    • Hazards: Toxic gases, low oxygen.

    • Controls: Air monitoring, rescue plan, ventilation.

  5. Working on Ladder Permit

    • Use: For tasks performed using portable ladders.

    • Hazards: Falls.

    • Controls: Inspection, proper angle/setup, spotters.

  6. Access Ladder Permit

    • Use: For accessing elevated areas via fixed or temporary ladders.

    • Hazards: Falls, instability.

    • Controls: Secure ladder points, three-point contact.

  7. Historical Access Permit

    • Use: For accessing heritage or sensitive historical structures.

    • Hazards: Structural damage.

    • Controls: Consultation with conservation experts.

  8. Interior/Concrete Penetration Permit

    • Use: For drilling/cutting into floors, walls, or ceilings.

    • Hazards: Striking utilities, structural compromise.

    • Controls: Scanning for rebar/pipes/wires.

  9. LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) Permit

    • Use: For work on energy systems (electrical, mechanical) that need to be isolated.

    • Hazards: Unexpected energy release.

    • Controls: Lockout devices, tags, isolation verification.

  10. Steel Erection Permit

  • Use: For assembling structural steel components.

  • Hazards: Falling objects, falls, structural instability.

  • Controls: Fall protection, rigging checks.

  1. Out of Basket Permit

  • Use: For exiting a man-basket or lift platform at height.

  • Hazards: Falls, equipment failure.

  • Controls: Fall arrest systems, platform stability.

  1. Ceiling Access Permit

  • Use: For work above ceiling tiles or in ceiling voids.

  • Hazards: Electrical, falling debris.

  • Controls: Area inspection, PPE, access control.
